Col SK Suri: A soldier Par-excellence, my IDEAL Fauji

TO COMMAND IS TO SERVE, NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS. My acquaintance with Col.SK Suri began when he came as our guest for Flag Hoisting on 15 August at PEHS. His voice flabbergasted me and many others. We could judge how he would have been when in the army.  We murmured, "Kya Zabardast Awaaz Hai". His speech made us fans of Faujis.   That’s the day when I got inspired by Col Suri, head over heels.  Although, I had Defence people in my mom's family. But I was always scared of them. One my uncle’s big mustache, rough voice etc. made me run away from him during my childhood days.   Meeting Col Suri changed my perspective about Faujis. Firstly, he didn't have that big moustache, unrounded at the corners, very attractive like his voice, dressed in his uniform. SHIRLEY UDAYKUMAR Most Indians would have heard the name of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw who led India to victory in 1971 defeating Pakistan and making 90,000 Paki soldiers as prisoners of war. This victory paved the formation of Bangladesh. It is very essential to remember and celebrate our war heroes as it fosters nationalism and sense of pride amongst our growing minds to derive inspiration for our Motherland. The supreme sacrifice our soldiers make in keeping peace and maintaining our sovereignty has to be appreciated by all Indians. In the five wars that India has fought with its neigbours in: 1947 Pakistan, 1962 China, 1965 Pakistan, 1971 Pakistan and Kargil 1999, we have always defeated Pakistan, our lamented cousin. China was an exception where we could stand China because of political mistakes. But behind such war victories is the bravery and gallantry of many officers and soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces consisting of Army, Navy and Air Force. It takes blood and sweat...

India is a young country where the youth (18-29 years) constitutes 22 per cent of India's population, which is more than 261 million people — larger than the population of Pakistan. Now, for these youngsters to be good citizens of the country they need take pride in the post-independent military history of the nation. The effort involved in maintaining independence and sovereignty of the nation is the job of the Indian Armed Forces, entrusted to secure the external borders against aggression from enemies. Since 1947 India has fought several wars with Pakistan and defeated them. The only war that we lost in 1962 was with China due to political reasons. But in May 2020, the Indian Army gave a bloody nose to the Chinese in Galwan Valley skirmishes that happened in Western Ladakh.
